Flinders Street Station
Flinders Street Station officially opened in 1910, its grand exterior painted an attractive red and cream, with windows and doors in a deep shade of blue-green. For years, countless city guides and Social Media posts have featured photographs of its mustard gold-exterior. In 2015, it was announced that the grand old building would undergo a $100 million refurbishment that featured a restoration back to the original colours selected by architects James Fawcett and H.P.C Ashworth.
Of course a refurbishment like this is far from simple, as it has been years since the station was painted in its intended colour scheme. The only existing photos of the station in its original coat are in black and white and therefore could not help discern the required colour specs. After an analysis of paint chips was completed by Melbourne University, the colours were determined and Higgins was selected to help restore this heritage building to its former glory.
With over 5,000 litres of Dulux, AcraTex our New Construction division worked passionately towards the goal of bringing the beloved station back to its grand roots. The exterior has been restored to its original vibrant red and cream, and the doors a stirring shade of blue green.
The Higgins team was honoured to be involved in such a landmark restoration and are ecstatic with the final version of the iconic building.
Our team's fantastic work has been further recognised at the annual Dulux Colour Awards, where the project won the coveted 'Commercial and Multi Residential Exterior' prize among 15 other finalists.
