It is very likely that we have all been stressed at work before. When deadlines or due dates loom, projects run behind schedule, suppliers don’t deliver on time, or we experience conflict with the people we manage, we can begin to feel considerable amounts of emotional, mental and physical strain.

And this strain can wear us thin. High stress levels can often increase our irritability and frustration levels, give us various bodily aches and pains, prevent us from being able to think straight, and lower our tolerance for anything else going wrong around us. We can become a nightmare to be around and our work performance can easily be affected. While work stress is inevitable, research shows that prolonged stress isn’t good for our health, so we do need to learn a thing or two about effective stress management.

The best way to ruin your chances of achieving that Zen status.

We all have our go-to coping mechanisms for when stress kicks in. We increase our caffeine or alcohol intake. We smoke more cigarettes. We eat more junk food, sleep less and stop exercising. We also work longer hours or we spend more time procrastinating. Some of us argue more; some of us disengage from those around us. All of these activities aren’t very helpful and some of them are sure-fire ways of only increasing our stress!

Stress management tips from some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs.

Managing your stress levels needn’t be stressful in and of itself. Introducing a few simple stress management approaches to your day should be enough to help you stay on top of things. If you find your stress levels kicking into overdrive, perhaps follow the lead of the likes of Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Richard Branson, who then choose to:

Meditate on the plan.

Instead of going into ‘head-in-hands-despair’ mode, take some time to sit down and think through all potential solutions for tackling the problem head on.

Keep it Simple, Stupid (KISS).

Stick to the basics of the job ahead, don’t overcomplicate things. If you can break your workload down into manageable chunks to tackle bit by bit, that overwhelmed feeling should be appropriately curbed.

Do something!

Once you have chosen a solution, get to it. You see, prolonged procrastination can often increase our stress levels, while focused activity helps us feel productive.

Remember to play.

Finding a good balance between the energy given to our work and the activities that renew us is crucial for managing our stress levels.

Practical stress management to keep your mind Zen and your body fit.

Other practical stress management tips include regular exercise to increase your endorphin levels and a balanced diet and regular meals to ensure that your adrenalin and blood sugar levels stay constant. When responsibilities start to weigh in on you, find that needed, practical support from work colleagues to share the load and help keep your anxiety at bay.
