Choosing the right paint colour for your property can be a difficult, confusing and time-consuming task. Colour has the ability to alter the perspective and feeling of the space around us - making it feel cool, warm, energetic, spacious or cosy. Usually, the tone of the paint colour for your home and working space reflects your unique style and personality.

To help achieve the best results for your next painting project, follow these 4 simple tips when you're choosing paint colours.

1. Source for inspiration

To find the perfect tone for your room or space, begin by sourcing inspiration. Scroll through magazines or visit websites such as Taubmans. Review colour charts online or at your local paint store whilst having an understanding of what you want to achieve with the finished product.

2. Think about your mood

When choosing paint colours or a particular shade, consider the mood of the room. Such as in a living room, do you want the feeling to be restful and soothing or dramatic? Soft, cool shades, such as blues, and neutrals usually create a quieter feeling whilst stronger shades such as red, create drama.

Again, do you want an office area to feel sociable and motivating or appear formal and quiet? Warmer, contrasting and somewhat brighter hues add to a sociable atmosphere, whereas deeper blues, greens and naturals will give a more formal ambience.

3. Pay attention to lighting

You may notice that some paint stores have light boxes for you to test paint chips. This is because natural daylight shows the truest colour, incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows and fluorescent lighting casts a sharp blue tone. Therefore, a strong bright hue may be too overpowering near a big window, however, may be more effective when used on a wall with indirect light.

4. Test your colour choice

Once you have chosen some paint colour options, it's time to put them to the test. Paint on your walls or on sheets of paper to hold up to your walls. Don’t be afraid to go beyond your comfort zone: consider strong, vivid hues or soft, deep neutrals as the main choice.

*TIP: Whether using samples on paper or chips, always hold the chips vertically.

Keep the sample option on the wall for a few days and watch how the colour might change throughout the day according to the light. Once you have chosen paint colours, you can further transform your space with subtle or dramatic visual textured furniture and accessories.
