Wollongong Hospital Helipad

The Wollongong Hospital Helipad was designed to enhance the rapid transport of critically ill patients and medical personnel.

Our Wollongong team executed a comprehensive refurbishment that included diamond grinding, waterproofing, painting, and line marking the helipad surface to meet specific slip rating requirements, ensuring durability against extreme environmental conditions.

The project faced several challenges, including logistical coordination with NSW Ambulance, NSW Health, and CASA to safely close the helipad while minimising community disruption. A carefully planned schedule allowed for a 10-day project turnaround. Additionally, operations were conducted above an active car park, necessitating public safety measures and minimal visitor impact. Weather conditions also posed difficulties; the large 35-meter diameter surface required meticulous attention to paint application under challenging circumstances, including high winds and significant rainfall. Daily cleaning and moisture testing were essential for optimal paint adhesion.

To address these challenges, the team developed a specialized industrial coating using a two-pack epoxy system topped with a polyurethane clear coat containing a non-slip additive. This unique specification ensures the helipad can withstand helicopter operations while preserving its appearance and functionality for years to come.

The project was successfully completed within the expected timeframe, demonstrating effective problem-solving and contingency planning.
