The RAAF Base Darwin is a heritage-listed operational air base in the Northern Territory. The Base still houses many buildings from WWII, including several Heritage Homes. Higgins was engaged to perform a repaint to these buildings.
The key challenge in repainting these heritage-listed buildings was the lead paint that required removal prior to repainting. There was a significant volume of lead that required removal, all of which had to be done ensuring no contaminants escaped.
We encapsulated the building, with all paint flakes double-bagged and disposed of off-site. Pre- and post- project all operatives had lead tests taken to ensure there was no exposure that could cause harm. Similarly, soil tests were taken pre- and post- project to ensure no lead had contaminated any surrounding soil.
Though challenging at times, our Darwin team was thrilled to be able to apply our craft to this historical site.
