For over a century, Toowoomba’s sweeping Empire Theatre has been the best spot in the city for entertainment. Back when it was built in 1911, the gracious art deco building was utilised as a cinema. Soon enough, vaudeville and other live acts began to take the stage. Fast forward to 2019, it’s now heritage-listed and regularly hosts a dizzying array of live theatre, comedy and music shows.
Recently, 12 of our painters embarked on a joint mission with Hutchinson Builders for Toowoomba Regional Council to give the jewel of the Darling Downs a much-deserved restoration. When performing a heritage restoration, extra care must be taken. These considerations came easily to our painters, who performed traditional plaster repairs to the main foyer and auditorium of the Empire. For coatings, we were thrilled to apply glittering metallic colours to all the heritage foyers. New paint was also applied throughout the interior of the theatre; renovated bars, stairwells, box offices, and additional amenities were all given a new coat.
When the project was completed, everything from the proscenium to the auditorium was in its finest form. We’re thrilled
with the results and proud of our Toowoomba branch for their tireless work on this very special building.
